In The Contemplators, I explore the body language of viewing and contemplating art by asking, “How do we look at art?” We examine finer details by leaning our neck forward and sinking into our shoulders. We step back to take an entire image in, innately tilting our head. When deep in thought, we stand with our feet firmly planted as we cross our arms and  bring a hand to our chin. Without intending to, we become art critics, deciding for ourselves whether a work of art is moving, inspiring, banal or confusing. Viewing art is rarely a passive act. 

 

While exploring my paintings in the series, I encourage the viewer to inject their own experience of looking at art, possibly in real time. Do you find yourself imitating the body language within the art? Perhaps you insert yourself into the painting and imagine the art that is being examined. Even further, you might envision yourself becoming a future painting in the series. 


Ultimately, my hope is that viewers actively participate with the works in The Contemplators, whether by mirroring the postures found in the paintings or by “stepping into” the art. As photographer Bill Henson said, “In every form of art, you really want the experience of the images to transcend the medium, for the medium to disappear into the greater experience of viewing the work. So that you forget you are looking at a painting, or a photograph.”
